This April past and present members of Coalporters ARC celebrated the club’s rich history at a special gala evening marking the club’s 150th anniversary. Coalporters ARC was founded in 1875 by dock workers who transported coal in barges to steamships. Today it is the oldest rowing club in Southampton and a vital part of the city’s rowing community.
The evening is a highlight in a year of celebrations. Other events include the Scott-Paine Challenge Trophy, Sat 3 May (between four Southampton-based rowing clubs); Annual Regatta, Sat 19 Jul; and Small Boats and Junior Regatta, Sat, 16 Aug. All events take place from the clubhouse off Northam Bridge, where the club has been based since the early 1960s.
To help preserve the club’s history, officials are calling out for any photos, memorabilia or information about significant moments and winning crews throughout the club’s history.
