Preserving the Past

Preserving the Past

Phase Three of the Heritage Asset Repair Programme (HARP) is now underway, with the contract awarded to Traditional Stone Restoration.
This latest phase will see work carried out at twenty locations across Southampton to repair and conserve important heritage assets, ensuring their safety and preservation for future generations.
Landmarks such as the Bargate, Tudor House, and key sections of the city’s medieval walls and vaults have already benefited from successful conservation in earlier phases. Phase Three is scheduled for completion by autumn 2025.
Southampton is known for its rich medieval history, and the Heritage Asset Repair Programme reflects the city’s commitment to protecting and celebrating this heritage. These sites not only shape Southampton’s identity but also contribute to its appeal as a destination and its wider economic development.
Repair works began in June 2023, with the first phase completed by the end of that year. Traditional Stone Restoration conserved several of Southampton’s most historic monuments during that phase, including the Town Walls along the Western Esplanade, the Forty Steps, the Castle Bailey Wall next to Castle Way, the West Gate roof, the wall surrounding St Mary’s Churchyard and the Tudor House Museum.
The work carried out through HARP supports the Renaissance Vision for Southampton by helping ensure that historic sites remain a source of inspiration for residents and visitors alike.
