This August, Eastleigh is inviting residents to slow down, soak in the scenery and discover the joy of walking and wheeling, thanks to a brand-new festival that’s all about connection, both with each other and the world around us.
Funded by Eastleigh Borough Council and Hampshire County Council and delivered by Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, the Walking and Wheeling Festival will run for 30 days, beginning Thursday 14 August. The first of its kind in the Borough, this month-long celebration of accessible movement will offer more than 30 free routes and events, all designed to get people moving under their own steam.
Whether you stroll, roll or ramble, there’s a route for everyone. Over 17 locations across Eastleigh, residents can join led or self-guided routes that cater to all abilities, ages and access needs. Each one promises something a little different, from gentle nature walks to creative trails inspired by local history and art. The festival also offers themed walks featuring storytelling, photography, wildlife spotting and even a sporting talk from triple-gold Paralympian swimmer Peter Hull MBE, who will share his inspiring journey to success at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
Kicking off the festival is a family-friendly adventure trail with a twist: ‘Careering Through Time: A Solve-A-Long Railway Adventure Created by The Point for the Hamble Rail Trail, this lively launch event is part of the national Railway 200 celebration, marking 200 years of public railways in Great Britain. Expect clues, characters and plenty of fun as families follow the trail and uncover the story of our local rail heritage. Most events are free but have limited places, so early booking is strongly recommended. You can choose from guided walks led by trained walk leaders and local volunteers, or grab a map and set off at your own pace on a self-guided route.
