Families in Hythe now have a brand-new reason to head outdoors, thanks to a creative collaboration between New Forest District Council and Waterside Primary School. The newly launched Viking-themed Trail Tale is an imaginative storytelling adventure that winds through local woodlands, offering children and parents the chance to get active while uncovering the mystery of a Viking ghost.
Created with the help of Waterside pupils and local artist and author Simon Chadwick, the trail begins at the Langdown Estate and stretches for a mile through green spaces, ending at Shore Road playing fields. Along the way, explorers can use a map and booklet to follow the story, complete playful challenges, and engage with their surroundings in a fun and meaningful way.
“This has been a great opportunity to encourage families to enjoy the benefits of being outdoors and explore their local neighbourhoods in a fun and imaginative way,” said Cllr Dan Poole, Portfolio Holder for Community, Safety and Wellbeing. “All of this supports mental wellbeing, physical health and community connection.”
Trail booklets are free to pick up at Hythe and Dibden Parish Council offices and Hythe Library, with a downloadable version also available for those who prefer a digital option.
The trail has been made possible with support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, bringing together local creativity, outdoor adventure and community pride in one imaginative package.
So grab a map, gather your crew, and set off to uncover the Viking secrets hiding in the heart of Hythe.
