Blue-green Algae Alert at Lakeside

Blue-green Algae Alert at Lakeside

Visitors to Lakeside Country Park in Eastleigh are being urged to avoid entering or coming into contact with the water, following the confirmed presence of blue-green algae in the lake. Eastleigh Borough Council has placed clear warning signs around the site advising people not to swim, paddle, or allow pets near the water while the algal bloom persists.
Blue-green algae, though a natural part of freshwater ecosystems, can pose serious health risks to humans, animals and wildlife when it blooms in large quantities. The algae can produce toxins that are harmful if touched or ingested, especially to dogs, who are particularly vulnerable even through small amounts of exposure.
The current bloom has been triggered by recent warm weather, followed by heavy rain and still, humid conditions, which together create the ideal environment for blue-green algae to flourish. Unfortunately, once present, the algae cannot be removed and must instead be left to dissipate naturally over time.
The Council and the Environment Agency are closely monitoring water quality and conditions at the park. While the algae remains visible, the public is strongly advised to refrain from swimming or paddling, and to prevent pets from entering or drinking the water. Even limited contact can lead to a range of symptoms in humans, including dermatitis, skin rashes, eye irritation, blistering, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and nausea. In dogs, symptoms may appear more rapidly and can be severe, including vomiting, lethargy, seizures or even death in extreme cases.
Anyone who believes they or their pet may have come into contact with the affected water should seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
Eastleigh Borough Council will continue to provide updates via its website and social media channels, and additional signage will be added if necessary.
In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to enjoy the park’s many other features—such as its walking trails, picnic areas and woodlands—while keeping a safe distance from the lake.
