Hampshire County Council is set to review proposals for two new facilities to process household food waste, supporting the rollout of food waste collections across the county.
On 23 June, Councillor Kirsty North will consider recommendations to use anaerobic digestion – a process that turns food waste into renewable energy and fertiliser.
Between 30,000 and 50,000 tonnes of food waste are expected to be collected each year once all local councils introduce kerbside collections by April 2026, as required by new national recycling rules.
Several Hampshire councils have already launched food waste collections, with others set to follow. The County Council is responsible for ensuring that appropriate recycling facilities are in place.
If approved, the new sites will help ensure that Hampshire residents can recycle food waste sustainably, close to home.
