Quarry
Controversial plans to expand the Roke Manor Quarry have been given the go ahead despite fears that it would destroy the countryside. A company spokesperson said great care had been taken to design an expansion to minimise disruption to residents and wildlife.

Branching Out
Keen gardeners should branch out to Sir Harold Hilliers Gardens on 17 March between 10am and 12.30pm to pick up tips on pruning techniques to encourage healthy plant growth.

King John
A bid to build a house on land near Romsey’s ancient King John’s House has been given the thumbs down by Test Valley planners. It is the second time that they have refused plans for work on land.

Top Award
Boss of a Romsey retirement village has scooped a national prize. Fiona Gebert, general manager of Audley Stanbridge Earls, was awarded the General Manager of the Year accolade at the annual Audley Spirit Awards.

Good Neighbours
Romsey Good Neighbours marked their 40th anniversary by throwing a party for current and past drivers and
co-ordinators. Reverend Nick Flood, treasurer for 38 years, outlined the history of the organisation.

Saved
An iconic sycamore tree near King John’s House, Romsey, will not face the axe after Test Valley Council planners confirmed a Tree Preservation Order.

Royal Visit
Romsey Companions Club had a royal visit when Sophie Rhys-Jones, Countess of Wessex and Forfar, popped in for a chat over a cuppa. She is patron of the care home charity, the Brendoncare Foundation.

Wild Side
A new wildlife hide in the 22 acres grounds of Romsey’s Stroud School has officially taken off with the help of TV
wildlife expert and New Forest resident Chris Packham. It’s part of the school’s outdoor learning curriculum.

Class Run
Local pupil, Gabby Pattison, aged 9, ran one mile a day in a fundraiser to build a new outdoor classroom at Cupernham Junior School, Romsey.

Right on Track
Romsey Railway Station is right on track when it comes to looking after its passengers. It was among top winners of
a station volunteers’ award.

Romsey Disabled People Partnership has called for more public toilets in the market town and is working with the council to install a changing places toilet.

1st Countess Mountbatten

Romsey’s Edwina Mountbatten House which closed last summer is set for a similar future role after being sold to Churchill Retirement Living. It was founded in the memory of Lady Edwina Mountbatten, 1st Countess Mountbatten of Burma and established in 1970.
