Cafe Nautical Mile
The cafe on East Park has re-opened. A great location that will be even better
once they turn the area in front of Solent University into a square and open it up. Mini golf will also return.


Keeping Active
Southampton is officially the UK’s most active city. It has 49 adventurous activities. Research has revealed that
there are nearly 20 attractions and activities per 100,000 people – the most in the whole of the UK.

Breakthrough
Scientists at the University Hospital, Southampton, have identified genes that could lead to identifying pancreatic cancer earlier by developing a screening programme.


Pollution Busters
Measures to improve public health are being rolled out across Southampton. A new Air Quality Action Plan sets out 60 schemes which the city council aims to explore and action over the next five years.
Portswood Broadway Controversial plans to bar private vehicles from using part of Portswood Broadway are to be thrown open to a debate this month after a protest campaign was mounted by residents and business owners.

A Boost to Learning
Solent University has been awarded more than £4 million to expand its course choices, boosting science,
technology, engineering and mathematics.

Conversion
St John’s Church, Shirley, which was the sister church of St James, is now occupied by the Church of Pentecost
UK. There was a joint service to celebrate the handover.

Dining Out
A pedestrianised piazza-style public area is being created at Carlton Place to encourage outside eating, pop
events and markets. Work is expected to be finished by 14 April.

Bugle Sounds Again
Landmark building, The Bugle, which overlooks the Royal Pier but has not been
in use for the last decade, has opened it’s doors again to stage luxurious sleepover celebrations, weddings, corporate events, photo shoots and homestays.

Bonus
Planners have given J D Weatherspoon the go ahead for The Standing Order, a former bank in Southampton High
Street, to get 20 extra hotel rooms and an outside seating area on the first floor.

The Saints Store
The Saints Store in The Marlands has closed down, leaving the St Mary’s stadium store the only place to buy official Saints merchandise.
