SAINSBURY’S TO BECOME THE MERCANTILE FLEA

Shopping trolleys used to rumble through the site. Now, the old Sainsbury’s in Bitterne is to take on a brand-new look and is set to be transformed into a ‘destination space.’

Vintage shop, Robins Nest Emporium, Southampton announced that it has joined forces with The Phoenix Emporium in Wiltshire to create ‘The Mercantile Flea.’

The unique collaboration between the two businesses will create a large single floor retail emporium area on the old Sainsbury’s site.

The Mercantile Flea will also house several independent street vendors and stage regular live music and arts performances, create workshop spaces, event areas, pop up shops and specialist roof markets throughout the year. Alongside this, subject to planning, there will also be an onsite brewery or bar area.

A spokesperson for the business said: “The scheme is an amazing opportunity that we could not miss out on and a great opportunity for us all to help drive our businesses forward. We have been drawing on all our passion and experience to offer an undertaking bigger in scale than our individual businesses, aiming to create a new South Coast destination space.”
