CENTENARY FOR FLYING SCOTSMAN
It’s the world most famous steam railway and next year it will be thundering through the Hampshire countryside to mark its centenary year.
Next month marks 100 years since the Flying Scotman entered service. To celebrate there will be a programme of events on tracks across the Hampshire.
On 17 June, the iconic locomotive will take passengers on a scenic journey from London Victoria to Portsmouth.
During the epic journey, The Flying Scotsman will pass through many stations across the county calling at Southampton and Fareham.
The locomotive started life as just another of Sir Nigel Gresley’s A1 class of locomotives but is now considered the most famous locomotive in the world.
It was built in Doncaster, the first locomotive of the newly formed London and North Eastern Railway. It left the works on 24 February 1923 and was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as part of the A1 class—the most powerful locomotives used by the LNER at that time.
It was christened Flying Scotsman after the daily 10am London to Edinburgh rail service which started in 1862.
